M17 1

The SIG P320 M17 with standard 17 round magazine.

The Sig Sauer P320 System is a modern modular weapon handgun system that has just been adopted by the U.S. Army as the M17 to replace its Beretta M9s.  The gun is a striker fired version of the modular P250 system.  The P250 was originally released in 2007 and the P320 in 2014.  The P320 is the first striker fired Sig Sauer.  The core of the gun is a trigger group containing the striker based double action firing system.  This group is also the serialized part.  This part can be combined with different grop modules, slides, barrels, and magazines to achieve over 100 configurations.  The grip modules are polymer, while the slides are steel.  Not counting the M17 derivatives, Sig currently offers 12 different grip module types in 44 different variants.

The variations for the non-M17 and M18 versions of the gun include the following with all in black or nitro unless stated as FDE (Flat Dark Earth):

  • Grip Module Types:  X-Five (up to 21 rds in 9mm), Full Size (up to 21 rds in 9mm), X-Carry (up to 21 rds in 9mm), Carry (up to 21 rds in 9mm), Lima Compact with Integrated Laser (up to 15 rds in 9mm), Compact (up to 15 rds in 9mm also available in FDE) & Sub-Compact (up to 12 rds in 9mm).

  • Magazines:  21, 17, 15, 12 and 10 round in 9mm; 14, 13 and 10 round in .40 S&W; 14 and 10 in .357 Sig; and 10 and 9 round in .45 ACP.

The U.S. Army versions of the P320 are called the M17 and M18.  The M17 uses a full size slide on a carry size grip module.   The M18 version uses a compact slide on the carry size grip.   Both versions differ from the standard P320 in having differnt sights, an external safety, and anti-tamper mechanisms to limit soliders to just field stripping their guns.  The Army plans to purchase at least 280,000 of these pistols and other branches of the U.S. Military may purchase up to 220,000.

U.S. Army M17

  • Grip Modules: Grips with external safeties and available in Small, Medium, or Large grip sizes in FDE.
  • Slides:  This uses the full-size slide that is 6.6” in length and has 3 rail slots.  The sights have tritium inserts and the rear sights are attached to a plate bolted to a slide cut out that can be removed for mounting a Delta Point Red Dot Optic.
  • Barrels and Calibers:  These are 4.7” in length.
  • Magazines:  Available in 21 and 17 rounds

U.S. Army M18

  • Grip Modules: Grips with external safeties and available in Small, Medium, or Large grip sizes in FDE.
  • Slides:  This uses the full-size slide that is 5.8” in length and has 3 rail slots.  The sights have tritium inserts and the rear sights are attached to a plate bolted to a slide cut out that can be removed for mounting a Delta Point Red Dot Optic.
  • Barrels and Calibers:  These are 3.9” in length.  They are available threaded or unthreaded in 9mm Luger.
  • Magazines:  Available in 21 and 17 rounds

There are currently 3 civilian versions of the M17.  They are exactly like the U.S. Military versions except that they lack the anti-tamper mechanism.

  • M17 Commemorative:  There were only 5,000 made of this model and they all came with two, 24 rd magzines and one 17 rd magazine.  They are distinguishable from other civilian guns by the FDE colored controls and a UIC code.  This makes them look exactly like the initial M17s issued to the 101st and 82nd airborne.
  • P320 M17:  This is a non-limited production version that ships with two, 17 rd magazines.  The controls are always black, but the slide and grip module are FDE.  This version does not have the UIC code.  The current military version controls are also black as the color was changed after the initial production run.  This version is also available without the manual safety.
  • P320 M17 Bravo:  This is a non-limited production version that ships with two, 17 rd magazines.  The entire gun   (controls, slide, and grip module) is black.  It also, does not have the UIC code.
